Anxiety Free Dental Visit
If the thought of visiting the dentist makes your skin crawl, you are not alone. Lots of people have fear or anxiety associated with dental treatment. At Rockville Centre Dentistry, we strive to create a comfortable and safe environment for our patients. Even with our friendly and calming demeanor, some people need extra help relaxing. For this reason, we offer sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide. The use of nitrous oxide will ensure you experience an anxiety-free dental visit.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medications to help patients relax during dental visits, from routine cleanings to more complex and invasive procedures. There are four sedation levels:
Henry F. Cuttler, DDS may recommend nitrous oxide if you suffer from severe anxiety related to dental procedures. The gas is colorless, odorless, and an effective sedative because it relaxes the patient, and produces feelings of euphoria. It is also useful because it takes and loses effect very quickly, making it ok to drive home after your procedure.
Nitrous oxide is administered through a face mask that is placed over the nose. The gas is also mixed with oxygen. This method of administration makes it easy for us to adjust your dose and ensure a comfortable experience. For this reason and more, it is widely considered to be a safe and effective method.
There are a few side effects of nitrous oxide, although the majority of patients experience zero issues. Potential side effects include headaches, shivering, excessive sweating, fatigue, and nausea or vomiting. These are rare instances because we can adjust your level of nitrous oxide. We also provide oxygen for at least five minutes after the procedure to avoid headaches.
Candidates for Nitrous Oxide
Sedation dentistry, such as nitrous oxide, is most suitable for people with real anxiety or fears that prevent them from receiving proper dental care. We may also recommend nitrous oxide if you have a low pain tolerance, extremely sensitive teeth, and a strong gag reflex. Nitrous oxide is also safe for children. We may recommend nitrous oxide if your child has trouble staying still in the dentist’s chair, or needs a large amount of dental work within a single appointment.
