Tooth Whitening

Teeth whitening before and after smile at Rockville Centre Dentistry When you smile, one of the first things that people notice is your teeth. How your teeth look has a significant impact on the quality of your smile. When your teeth are dull and discolored, not only can it affect your smile, it can also impact your confidence. At Rockville Centre Dentistry, we can help to eliminate stains and discoloration from your teeth, enhancing the beauty of your smile, with tooth whitening.

Causes of Discoloration

The enamel of your teeth is naturally white in color. However, there are many different factors that can cause stains, dulling the natural brightness of your smile. Common causes for discoloration include:
•  What you eat and drink. Certain types of foods and beverages have high concentrations of dark pigments that can stick to your teeth, dulling their color.
•  Tobacco products. Cigarettes and other tobacco products can cause unsightly brown or yellow stains.
•  Certain types of medications. Some medications can cause deep stains inside your teeth.
•  Age. As you age, your teeth begin to become discolored naturally as a result of thinning tooth enamel.

Eliminating Discoloration with Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a procedure designed to eliminate stains on your teeth, restoring their bright, white brilliance. While there are products available over the counter in the oral hygiene aisle at the grocery store, these products only contain low levels of bleaching agents. As a result, they cannot produce the drastic results many patients seek.

We can whiten your teeth in one of two ways, chairside whitening or whitening trays. Chairside whitening is an in-office procedure that takes about an hour of your time. After cleaning your teeth, we apply the bleaching agent to the surfaces of your teeth. A special light is shone over your mouth. The active ingredient in the bleaching agent breaks down, forming tiny oxygen bubbles that enter into your enamel. The bubbles cling to stains and bleach them away. The light helps to enhance the results, which are visible immediately after your treatment.

If you would rather whiten your teeth on your own time, we can provide you with whitening trays. With this treatment, you are provided with custom created trays that are made from impressions of your mouth. The trays are designed to be worn for a few hours twice a day or overnight while you sleep. They hold the bleaching agent against your teeth, allowing it to work effectively while you do other things. Treatment with whitening trays generally takes about one to two weeks, depending upon your degree of discoloration. Results typically begin to show in just under a week.

Is Tooth Whitening Safe?

Tooth whitening is a very safe and very effective treatment for eliminating stains and restoring the brilliance of your smile. One of the most common issues that teeth whitening can cause is tooth sensitivity during treatment. This sensitivity is only temporary and will go away after your treatment is complete. If the sensitivity is uncomfortable, a specially designed toothpaste can be used to help deal with the issue until your treatment is complete.

How Long Does Tooth Whitening Last?

While effective, tooth whitening is not permanent. The same factors that caused the discoloration in the first place can lead to discoloration again. However, there are things that you can do to help prolong the results, keeping your smile bright and white longer. Things you can do include limiting staining foods and beverages, quitting smoking and drinking, brushing and flossing daily, and having your teeth periodically touched up.

With professional tooth whitening, we can restore the bright, white color of your teeth, giving you back your gorgeous smile and boosting your confidence. For more information, and to schedule your consultation, call Rockville Centre Dentistry today at (516) 678-0100.
